After the performance, Sienna, the girl who played the naughty student, said she dreamed of becoming a great actress in the future. Finally, the Chinese song "Congratulations" as the finale show was sung by 5/6K students. Specimen Hill Primary School has given a great support to the Confucius Classroom program. This year two Grade 5/6 students participate in "Hello, China" project heading to China for a cultural experience, which is contributed to the exchange and development of Australian and Chinese culture. Weeroona College is located in the city of Bendigo, Victoria, Australia. The school was established in 1999, and as one of the five public high schools in Bendigo, it provides Year 7 to Year 10 secondary education to around 800 students.
The school takes LOTE program as their curriculum priority and develops as a specialist program. Weeroona College is one of the earliest schools that set up Chinese learning program in the Great Bendigo Region. The curriculum and program structure of Chinese learning is well developed. All new Year 7 students have to choose either Chinese or French as their compulsory subject. Other year levels are all having corresponding level of Chinese subject for those who want to further develop their Chinese. Weeroona College is one of the 3 public high school partners with Confucius Classroom of Bendigo Senior Secondary College, having a friendly and strong partnership with it. From 2013, Confucius Classroom of Bendigo Senior Secondary College began to support the Chinese teaching in Weeroona College. From 2016, they agreed to continue strengthening their existing partnership. The school has employed the Chinese teacher from Confucius Classroom as their new Year 7 students’ Chinese teacher. The number of students taking Chinese as their second language learning has increased by 50% compared to the figure in the previous year. This excellent result has strongly linked to the effort that made by the college leadership team and local Confucius Classroom promoting Chinese language learning in the local community. During the Spring Festival, Chinese Classroom in Weeroona College organized a series of Spring Festival activities, including Chinese new year introduction, Chinese paper cutting, sticking window decorations and hanging lanterns. The activities were well supported by the Principal Ms. Leanne Peace and the school leadership team. The passion for and interests on learning Chinese have been promoted among students, and have also deepened the students’understanding of Chinese language and culture. In 2016, many initiatives are going to be set up between Confucius Classroom in Bendigo Senior Secondary College and Weeroona College. They will improve the students’ second language skills, and strengthen the bridge of friendship between China and Australia. As a part of our Chinese language learning, in order to allow students to experience traditional Chinese culture and arouse their interest in Chinese culture and Chinese language, collaborating with Confucius Classroom teachers, our school organises a variety of Chinese culture experience workshops for students to explore during their lunch time on every Wednesday. Students are immersed in various Chinese cultural activities which include Chinese calligraphy, Chinese paper cutting, Chinese ink painting, Chinese martial arts, and other Chinese art craft making.
This Wednesday (on 11th May) our school has organised a Chinese calligraphy activity. Although it was the first time for Camp Hill Primary School to have a Chinese calligraphy workshop during lunch time, students were excited and showed great interest and enthusiasm to participate. During the workshop, the teacher first introduced the origin of Chinese characters and the significance of Shufa (Chinese calligraphy) in Chinese cultures, and showing how to properly hold a Chinese brush pen and how to write some basic strokes of Chinese characters. After explanation, the students started to practice writing Chinese characters with Chinese brush pen. All of them were amazed by the “magic paper” (a special cloth paper using only water to write) and the beauty of Chinese calligraphy. At the end of the workshop, they were so proud that they can write Chinese characters with Chinese brush pen. All students had enormous fun in learning about Chinese calligraphy and practicing writing Chinese calligraphy, and this was just the very beginning of our Chinese culture experience workshops. Come and join us next Wednesday. In term 2, 2016, our schedule for Chinese culture experience workshops is as below: 11th May Chinese calligraphy 18th May Chinese calligraphy 25th May Chinese calligraphy 1st June Chinese paper cutting 8th June Chinese knot making 15th June Chinese Kungfu – Tai Chi |
