On Wednesday, the 20th of June, we invited our students and their parents to come for a showcase night at which we had our students to show their parents some of their achievement through a range of different activities and performances. Although it was very cold in Bendigo (the lowest temperature was negative one degree on that day), but our students’ and their parents’ enthusiasm for learning the Chinese language and culture have already heated up the air. As a strong believer in the importance of community, I don’t think you could find a better example of parent and community engagement than inviting and involving the parents to share their children’s progress and achievement together. The showcase night was started with a warm welcome speech from Mr. Lin, the Chinese language coordinator from Confucius Classroom at the Bendigo Senior College. He firstly expressed our appreciation for the great support and encouragement that the parents have given to their children. He then shared his own experiences of learning English as a second language. He also told the participants the importance and benefit of learning Chinese as a second language, and encouraged the students to enhance their language skills so that they can pursue a better career around the world. After the speech, our students successfully hosted a mini concert and joyfully demonstrated their great success for the Semester One in 2018. A rapping of Chinese family was after the song ‘Counting Ducks’, through which our kids showed their patents the differences in describing family members in Chinese and English. Then our students surprised their parents again by reading a simple bilingual story from the great classical novel called ‘Journey to the West.’ The highlight of the show was the students sang the song ‘Counting Stars’ to express their thanks and loves for their family. Of course, the beaming smile on our parents’ faces can tell you how proud they were when they see their kids’ great performances. Since food has been a major part of every culture in the world, after the show we also invited our kids and parents to make dumplings together. In the dumpling making session, our students and parents happily experienced this cultural activity by cooking and eating like Chinese people. They have learned the art of making their own beautiful dumplings in the hands on session. They learnt about some Asian ingredients and how to use them. The parent helpers also learnt some secret recipe of making juicy and crispy dumplings from the teachers. Both the food and the experience were excellent, no wondering the students always asked us ‘Can we make dumplings this term? 学员演唱《数鸭歌》 活动当天,孔院还邀请了学生和家长一起制作和品尝煎饺,切实地体验了一次地道的中国饮食文化。 The showcase night was a resounding success! We have great feedback from both the students and parents. Definitely, it was a wonderful broader community event, with excellent cultural experiences for all the participants. It was terrific to see our confident students performing Chinese dances and songs in front of their family. Thank-you to the parents who attended and provided an audience for our student performers. 合影 本迪戈中学孔子课堂社区课每周三晚举行,共设有四个班,分别是成人初级班、成人高级班、少儿班和青少班,全部由孔院教师授课。

We are Grade 5/6 students from Specimen Hill Primary School. In Term 2, we have been practising introducing ourselves in Chinese – our name, age, nationality, hobbies and school. Recently, we participated into a very interesting cultural activity – the School Research, in which we searched information from the website of a primary school in China and compared the school lives of Australian and Chinese primary students.
The activity started with Zhang Laoshi showing us a video What’s the Education System Like in China. We were introduced to the various education pathways and options that Chinese students have when they progress from compulsory to higher education. We have noticed many features in the Chinese education system, such as different schooling schedule of semesters and holidays, as well as the most important and competitive national exam – Gaokao. We were very impressed when watching how hardworking Chinese students are in order to achieve their academic and personal goals. With the curiosity of how a day in Chinese primary schools is like, we used iPad to access to the website of Experimental Primary School of Beijing Normal University, read through the school profile and took notes regarding the school timetable, curriculum, mottos for students and its sister schools. Led by Zhang Laoshi, we discussed and recognised the similarities and differences between the primary schools in China and Australia – different school arrival and departure times, different lesson durations, different extra-curricular activities and school values. But overall, we understand that in both two countries, students are all encouraged to make every day count at school, to set our goals clearly, to concentrate on learning and become virtuous and resilient individuals. We enjoyed the School Research as we have explored more about the uniqueness of Chinese society and culture. Not only can we introduce our school in Chinese sentences, we now also understand how children spend their days differently in Australian and Chinese primary schools. Xiexie yuedu! Zai jian! |
