Cardross Primary School has just under one hundred students – from Prep to Grade 6. The school is located 400 kilometres from Bendigo, in the town of Cardross – a rural area of Victoria, servicing around 800 people. Cardross Primary School has had an interest in providing their students Chinese language program since last year. However, being so rural it has been very difficult for them to source a permanent Chinese teacher. Since, our virtual program was the best option for them.
We currently deliver a thirty-minute lesson to 2 classes of prep to grade 2 students every week. We also provide lesson plans and learning materials to the teachers of Cardross P.S. for them to run another thirty-minute revision lesson every week. As the lesson is delivered via Polycom video conferencing unit, there has been some challenges. For instance, the level of power over managing students’ behaviour in class is a lot lower comparing to normal in class lessons. Luckily the teachers of Cardross P.S. have been very supportive. They also showed strong enthusiasm in learning Chinese with the students. Our virtual learning program has been delivered successfully. Our students of Cardross P.S. have been learning fast as well. But as for what our students have learnt, let our prep – Grade 2 students tell you all about it next time!
