Epsom Primary School had a Chinese Cultural Day A Chinese Cultural Day was held in Epsom Primary School in Bendigo, Australia on 19th June, 2017 by the BSSC Confucius Classroom. Students from Gr 3-6 took part in the four activities: paper cutting, chopstick challenge, dumpling making and ink blowing painting with enthusiasm and showed their great talent and creation in their works. They all enjoyed this cultural day and said they would like more cultural activities in the future. Epsom Primary School is one of the first schools joining in the Chinese Programme with the BSSC Confucius Classroom. The students there have been learning Chinese for over 4 years. This cultural day which was like by many students has enabled them to experience the traditional Chinese culture as well as the Chinese language. Nihao, everyone! I am here to share with you some exciting news that happened during the school holidays. Around 60 students from different primary schools in the Bendigo area participated in the Easter Day Parade on Sunday 16th April. All the students formed into a big team and we were definitely the centre of the attention for the parade. All the students first put on colourful costumes and had some finger food. After a short break and performance practice, everyone headed down to the venue together. The whole team sang two traditional Chinese songs Two Tigers and Gong Xi Gong Xi (Congratulations in Chinese) and did a fabulous dance of the Chinese version of the Chicken Dance, as this year is the Year of the Rooster. All the students showed great manners throughout the whole parade and received so much positive feedback from parents and the audience. I am excited to show you some of the photos taken.
Chinese Cultural Experience Workshop This month our kids actively participate in different cultural learning activities so to celebrate both the Chinese New Year and the Lantern Festival. As we know that 2017 is the year of the Fire Rooster ‘Ding You’(丁酉), also the animal year of the people under the zodiac sign of Rooster. Therefore, at this week’s Chinese Cultural Experience Workshop we have our students to make paper rooster lanterns. After the Confucius Classroom teacher from Bendigo Senior College quickly show them some beautiful samples and simply demonstrate how to make the lantern step by step, our children just can’t wait to make a quick start on their own D.I.Y. creation. Actually some creative ideas from them actually are very inspiring, for example they make a bow tie for the chook, and copy Donald Trump’s hair style for the rooster. We are so proud of what we have made and created while we have great fun. (A journey of thousands of miles may not be achieved through accumulation of each single step, just as the enormous ocean may not be formed without gathering every stream). Come to join us and make your small single step on every Monday. Step after step the ladder is ascended, and your written Chinese is developed.
From the 12th of March, Bendigo Senior Secondary College (BSSC) held the annual ‘Cultural Diversity Week’. The teachers and students from different countries and ethnic backgrounds brought together wonderful cultural experiencing activities by cooking delicious food, teaching ethnic dancing and organizing fun games. At lunchtime on the 14th of March, the Chinese teachers and volunteer students prepared a variety of cultural activities such as food-tasting, chopstick challenge and plum blossom blow painting for our participants. The participants only had to learn ‘Hello! Thanks!’ in Chinese to get delicious spring rolls and dumplings. They also could finish a beautiful ink blowing painting of a plum blossom within five minutes under the guidance of students from the Chinese class. Besides that, they could earn special gifts if they won a game of the chopstick challenge. The activities have given the students wonderful experiences of typical Chinese culture and also helped raise their interests in Chinese studies. “The dumplings taste great, I would like to go to China and learn more Chinese culture one day”, said one of the international students. The farewell meeting to Hanban teacher Hui Hu was held by the Acting Principal Linda Lyons of Bendigo Senior Secondary College and the staff at the language centre on 21 Feb, 2017. Hui has been working as a Confucius Classroom teacher at the BSSC Confucius Classroom since January, 2015 and has widely delivered Chinese and Chinese culture to the local students and communities. Ms Linda Lyons issued the BSSC mug, plate and bag to Hui and thanked her for her hard work in the past two years. Hui expressed her thanks to BSSC and the principal, and had a group photo taken with Linda and the rest of the staff. This farewell meeting also encouraged the rest of the Hanban teachers to work hard in BSSC Confucius Classroom in the future.
With the great support from the Confucius Classroom from the Bendigo Senior College, our Chinese Cultural Experience Workshop is back to school this week. We feel grateful that our committed and passionate learners keep coming back to the workshop. After a long celebration of the Chinese Lunar New Year (15 days), this Monday, our kids joyfully practice writing some lucky phrases in Chinese with the brush. Most students choose to write down the very popular Chinese character “福” which means happiness and good fortune. Some students even challenge themselves further by writing down some good luck wishes like “大吉大利” and “恭喜发财” which often can be seen on the red envelopes红包. It is also delightful to see our new Preps actually take part in writing some simple Chinese characters such as 一,二,三,十.
The First Chinese Classes in Term 1 of 2017
The staff at the BSSC Confucius Classroom returned to their jobs after Christmas in 2017, and everyone was ready for the new term. The first classes started at the second week of the term, and as a new member of the team, I felt honored and pleased to observe and share the first classes at different primary schools in Bendigo. The very first class in this term I observed was a virtual class delivered to Cardross Primary School on the first day of Week 2, which surprised me. I was told later that the Polycom video conferencing unit has been used since last year, and this virtual learning program has been successful in the past one year. With the hot weather, the first Chinese classes were conducted during the past one week at different primary schools in Bendigo, including Violet Street, Goornong, Camphill, Marong and etc, in which, I felt the enthusiasm of the teaching staff and the students, and also their curiosity about the Chinese culture. I could also see the importance and the great developing prospects of the international Chinese language education. All of the above made me confident in delivering Chinese and Chinese culture. Next I will share a few pictures of the first Chinese classes. Mahjong is a widespread Chinese traditional game. It is said that Confucius, the great Chinese philosopher developed Mahjong in approximately 500 BC.
During the Mid-autumn festival of 2016, the Mahjong class came back to the Confucius classroom to celebrate this important festival together. Dozens of students came to Confucius classroom to play Mahjong on Wednesday nights. The Confucius classroom invited a guest teacher - Liangpei Li who is an associate professor in China to teach Mahjong. In the Mahjong class, Mr Li introduced the history and the equipment of this game. Students learned the basics and standard rules of Mahjong and did plenty of in-session practice. “Playing Mahjong is so fun and it is a game of skill calculation and luck. It is a wonderful Chinese cultural experience” Some of the students said. Community class students also had moon cakes with Chinese tea while enjoying Mahjong. It was full of laughs and happiness in the classroom. This Thursday, the whole school celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity. In the Chinese section, with the support of Confucius Classroom of Bendigo Senior College(Thank you Mr Lin, Ms Hu, Ms Zhang and Ms Wang), our Camp Hill kids enjoy dumpling making, tasting traditional food and art craft making. Can you imagine that most of our kids have ‘magic hands’ and naturally know how to make beautiful dumplings with different shapes? They have all done a fantastic job on making dumplings.
The dumpling workshops are held in the staff room. Prior to starting the workshop, the Chinese teacher explains to students that ‘making dumplings is considered very good luck. Dumplings signify that wealth and treasure will come to you’. After showing the ingredients of making beef and vegetable dumplings, the teacher demonstrates the technique of making different styles of dumplings such as sun flower and gold fish. All students then have a chance to form and sample finished dumplings. The highlight of the workshop is of course tasting the products of their effort. The juicy dumpling made by our kids definitely taste better than anything mums buy in the supermarket, store or restaurant. They feel like a rock star when they gaze upon the unique dumplings with personal style. The dumpling making activity is fun and satisfying, and it brings so much joy and laughter to our students. The 2016 Year 8, 9&10 Chinese excursion to the Chinese Cultural Museum in Melbourne’s Chinatown district was a great cultural experience for all involved. Students were given the opportunity to develop and engage with the language skills and cultural knowledge that they had gained over the years of Chinese learning. The excursion began with a scavenger hunt, providing students a chance to explore the heritage listed buildings in Little Bourke Street which tell the story of life for new arrivals in the 1850s. This was followed by a tasty hot-pot lunch that immersed students in the Chinese culture and enriched their experience further. Following lunch students were engaged in a guided tour of the Chinese museum in which they gain an overview of the Chinese and Chinese-Australian history and culture beginning with Finding Gold, an introduction of life on goldfields in the 1850s and following by understanding the powerful symbol of the Chinese dragon and insights to the life of Chinese Australians. This excursion allowed for Year 8, 9&10 students to explore the rich and diverse history and culture of China and how it is relevant to Australian today as well as allowing for the application of students’ classroom knowledge to the wider community. |
