Ni hao! We are Grade 5/6 students from Specimen Hill Primary School. In Term 2, we have been practising introducing ourselves in Chinese – our name, age, nationality, hobbies and school. Recently, we participated into a very interesting cultural activity – the School Research, in which we searched information from the website of a primary school in China and compared the school lives of Australian and Chinese primary students.
The activity started with Zhang Laoshi showing us a video What’s the Education System Like in China. We were introduced to the various education pathways and options that Chinese students have when they progress from compulsory to higher education. We have noticed many features in the Chinese education system, such as different schooling schedule of semesters and holidays, as well as the most important and competitive national exam – Gaokao. We were very impressed when watching how hardworking Chinese students are in order to achieve their academic and personal goals. With the curiosity of how a day in Chinese primary schools is like, we used iPad to access to the website of Experimental Primary School of Beijing Normal University, read through the school profile and took notes regarding the school timetable, curriculum, mottos for students and its sister schools. Led by Zhang Laoshi, we discussed and recognised the similarities and differences between the primary schools in China and Australia – different school arrival and departure times, different lesson durations, different extra-curricular activities and school values. But overall, we understand that in both two countries, students are all encouraged to make every day count at school, to set our goals clearly, to concentrate on learning and become virtuous and resilient individuals. We enjoyed the School Research as we have explored more about the uniqueness of Chinese society and culture. Not only can we introduce our school in Chinese sentences, we now also understand how children spend their days differently in Australian and Chinese primary schools. Xiexie yuedu! Zai jian!
