Rolling out of the Chinese Taster Program at Bendigo Kindergarten4/27/2018
On 26th April, a Chinese lesson was given to a group of 4-year-old kindergarten children at Nuture One Childcare centre by the Chinese teachers (Juncai Lin, Lin Xu, Di Wang) from Confucius Classroom of Bendigo Senior Secondary College (BSSC). It was an exciting experience for the children because this was the first of its kind where Mandarin native speaker teachers came to their classroom and interacted with them. The lesson started with a group conversation led by the Mandarin teachers helping the children become aware of the different languages they were listening to. Then the children followed the teachers and counted the numbers in many ways in Mandarin to make it fun while learning them. The children were then engaged in a dumpling cooking session that involved practising their motor skills with hands and fingers. Everyone was very keen and enthusiastic about making their first dumpling. As they finished making the first one, they were very proud of themselves and were eager to make more. The children practised counting the number in Mandarin again while playing Hide and Seek. When it was close to the end of the game, lunch time came and they got to enjoyed the dumplings as part of their lunch that day. The taster program for the kindergarten children was a great success with very positive feedback received from the childcare centre’s manager, educators, parents and children. BSSC Confucius Classroom currently leads the Chinese language and culture learning program for more than 5800 students across 28 schools in Bendigo and we aims to extend our support of Mandarin learning to younger children in the kindergarten levels in the next few months.
