Chinese Cultural Experience Workshop This month our kids actively participate in different cultural learning activities so to celebrate both the Chinese New Year and the Lantern Festival. As we know that 2017 is the year of the Fire Rooster ‘Ding You’(丁酉), also the animal year of the people under the zodiac sign of Rooster. Therefore, at this week’s Chinese Cultural Experience Workshop we have our students to make paper rooster lanterns. After the Confucius Classroom teacher from Bendigo Senior College quickly show them some beautiful samples and simply demonstrate how to make the lantern step by step, our children just can’t wait to make a quick start on their own D.I.Y. creation. Actually some creative ideas from them actually are very inspiring, for example they make a bow tie for the chook, and copy Donald Trump’s hair style for the rooster. We are so proud of what we have made and created while we have great fun. (A journey of thousands of miles may not be achieved through accumulation of each single step, just as the enormous ocean may not be formed without gathering every stream). Come to join us and make your small single step on every Monday. Step after step the ladder is ascended, and your written Chinese is developed.
From the 12th of March, Bendigo Senior Secondary College (BSSC) held the annual ‘Cultural Diversity Week’. The teachers and students from different countries and ethnic backgrounds brought together wonderful cultural experiencing activities by cooking delicious food, teaching ethnic dancing and organizing fun games. At lunchtime on the 14th of March, the Chinese teachers and volunteer students prepared a variety of cultural activities such as food-tasting, chopstick challenge and plum blossom blow painting for our participants. The participants only had to learn ‘Hello! Thanks!’ in Chinese to get delicious spring rolls and dumplings. They also could finish a beautiful ink blowing painting of a plum blossom within five minutes under the guidance of students from the Chinese class. Besides that, they could earn special gifts if they won a game of the chopstick challenge. The activities have given the students wonderful experiences of typical Chinese culture and also helped raise their interests in Chinese studies. “The dumplings taste great, I would like to go to China and learn more Chinese culture one day”, said one of the international students. The farewell meeting to Hanban teacher Hui Hu was held by the Acting Principal Linda Lyons of Bendigo Senior Secondary College and the staff at the language centre on 21 Feb, 2017. Hui has been working as a Confucius Classroom teacher at the BSSC Confucius Classroom since January, 2015 and has widely delivered Chinese and Chinese culture to the local students and communities. Ms Linda Lyons issued the BSSC mug, plate and bag to Hui and thanked her for her hard work in the past two years. Hui expressed her thanks to BSSC and the principal, and had a group photo taken with Linda and the rest of the staff. This farewell meeting also encouraged the rest of the Hanban teachers to work hard in BSSC Confucius Classroom in the future.
With the great support from the Confucius Classroom from the Bendigo Senior College, our Chinese Cultural Experience Workshop is back to school this week. We feel grateful that our committed and passionate learners keep coming back to the workshop. After a long celebration of the Chinese Lunar New Year (15 days), this Monday, our kids joyfully practice writing some lucky phrases in Chinese with the brush. Most students choose to write down the very popular Chinese character “福” which means happiness and good fortune. Some students even challenge themselves further by writing down some good luck wishes like “大吉大利” and “恭喜发财” which often can be seen on the red envelopes红包. It is also delightful to see our new Preps actually take part in writing some simple Chinese characters such as 一,二,三,十.
The First Chinese Classes in Term 1 of 2017
The staff at the BSSC Confucius Classroom returned to their jobs after Christmas in 2017, and everyone was ready for the new term. The first classes started at the second week of the term, and as a new member of the team, I felt honored and pleased to observe and share the first classes at different primary schools in Bendigo. The very first class in this term I observed was a virtual class delivered to Cardross Primary School on the first day of Week 2, which surprised me. I was told later that the Polycom video conferencing unit has been used since last year, and this virtual learning program has been successful in the past one year. With the hot weather, the first Chinese classes were conducted during the past one week at different primary schools in Bendigo, including Violet Street, Goornong, Camphill, Marong and etc, in which, I felt the enthusiasm of the teaching staff and the students, and also their curiosity about the Chinese culture. I could also see the importance and the great developing prospects of the international Chinese language education. All of the above made me confident in delivering Chinese and Chinese culture. Next I will share a few pictures of the first Chinese classes. |
