On 27th of March, Miss Wang Yilin, a Hanban teacher from Bendigo Senior Secondary College held a fun Chinese cultural class for nearly 60 students at Violet Street Primary School. During the session, based on the cultural difference between Australia and China, Miss Wang asked the students “What’s the most important festival in Australia and in China? What do people eat on that day?” Some students said it would be Christmas and what their family usually had on that day and some students said that it would be Easter and what they usually had on that day. All the students could tell that the most important festival to Chinese people would be Chinese New Year, also known as , Spring Festival. Students said that Chinese people ate dumplings ,spring rolls, shrimps and etc on Chinese New year. Miss Wang made some comments on their answers and also mentioned people from northern part of China and southern part of China actually had different preference on their daily food and the food even differed on New Year’s Day. However, Chinese southerns and Chinese northerners would all have fish on Chinese New Year. Because fish sounds “surplus” in Chinese language. If a person eats fish at the beginning of the year, he will have some “surplus” at the end of the year, and eventually he will become very rich. Then, Miss Wang wrote the character “ 鱼” on the board and explain the structure of the character and also led the students to read a few times. After that, Miss Wang taught the students how to make a movable fish with colored paper . With clear instructions, every student made a fish successfully .
In this session, students not only realised the cultural difference between Australia and China, but also got to know a little bit more about China. Confucius Classroom in Annual School Fair of Strathfieldsaye Primary School3/26/2018

Bendigo South East College students held fund-raising activity for China trip3/23/2018
From the 21th of March, fund-raising activity for China trip was held by students from Bendigo South East college. With the help from local Chinese teacher and 2 hanban teachers from Bendigo Senior Secondary College Confucius Classroom, the students made dumplings and Chinese-flag cupcakes and sold to the whole school. Before lunchtime, the students were already busy in the school canteen preparing for Chinese food. They planned to make dumplings and cupcakes with Chinese flag on them to make the food meaningful for this China trip. They also prepared vegetable dumplings for vegetarian students and teachers. All the students were led by themselves and were well-organized as well. When the lunchtime bell rang, 200 dumplings and 30 cupcakes were ready for the students and teachers to try. In front of the selling table, the queue was so-long that there weren’t enough dumplings to sell to them. Within a short period, all the food were sold out. ‘it was tiring preparing for this fund-raising activity, but I learnt to make dumplings by myself. I am looking forward for the China trip.’ A student from Bendigo South East college said. The students experienced the fun of making typical Chinese food apart from language learning with this fund-raising activity. The up-coming China trip has also become more meaningful for them. At Camp Hill Primary School we all celebrated Harmony Day for a whole week. In our daily life we often use food as a means of retaining our cultural identity. People from different cultural backgrounds eat different foods. Therefore, to celebrate the cultural diversity in our community, in Chinese class we made dumplings which the Chinese cooks have enjoyed a version known as 饺子(jiǎo zi) for more than 1,800 years. Today, 饺子(jiǎo zi) is still one of the most tractional dishes in most parts of northern China. In northern China, making dumplings is an important activity for most families on New Year’s Eve. For people who live overseas like me, no words can precisely describe our affection for饺子(jiǎo zi), as this food has already become a symbol of home and warmth. In the dumpling making workshop, our students happily experienced this cultural activity by cooking and eating like Chinese people. All students (Year One to Year Six) have learned the art of making their own beautiful dumplings in the hands on class. They learnt about some Asian ingredients and how to use them. Some Year Six students also learnt some of the secrets of Ms. Chan’s kitchen by helping as a kitchen hand in the class. They probably will surprise you by cooking you dumplings during the weekend. If you heard the students said ‘It is the best food I have ever had’, you might feel that it was a little bit exaggerated. However, the truth was that they all loved the food and felt excited to use chopsticks to eat dumplings. It was so great to see our students try different foods from different cultures. We all know that it needs courage to take the first step, especially for the little ones. Luckily, on Wednesday, with the support of Confucius Classroom of Bendigo Senior College(Thank you Mr Lin, Ms Wang and Mr. Xu), our Year 3-4 students also enjoyed the beauty of Chinese martial art. After students finished making dumplings, Ms Wang and Mr. Xu took our students out and taught them how to play Five-step Boxing五步拳(wǔ bù quán) and Taiji太极(tài jí). Of course, this activity would not help our kids with their agility immediately, but definitely, it brought a lot of joy and laughter to our students and helped them to develop a better understanding of Chinese martial art and Chinese cultures. It was not surprised that our kids said “We wish every day is harmony day.”
From the 12th of March, Bendigo Senior Secondary College (BSSC) held the annual ‘Cultural Diversity Week’. The teachers and students from different countries and ethnic backgrounds brought together wonderful cultural experiencing activities by cooking delicious food, teaching ethnic dancing and organizing fun games. At lunchtime on the 14th of March, the Chinese teachers and volunteer students prepared a variety of cultural activities such as food-tasting, chopstick challenge and plum blossom blow painting for our participants. The participants only had to learn ‘Hello! Thanks!’ in Chinese to get delicious spring rolls and dumplings. They also could finish a beautiful ink blowing painting of a plum blossom within five minutes under the guidance of students from the Chinese class. Besides that, they could earn special gifts if they won a game of the chopstick challenge. The activities have given the students wonderful experiences of typical Chinese culture and also helped raise their interests in Chinese studies.
“The dumplings taste great, I would like to go to China and learn more Chinese culture one day”, said one of the international students. Bendigo Senior Secondary College Confucius Classroom Celebrate Chinese New Year2/16/2018

At the end of the competition, Mr. Lin commented on their speech and performance before the winners and awards were announced. In October, Weeroona College Bendigo students were given the opportunity to engage in Chinese culture. They started in Beijing where, with the support of English speaking guides, they explored a number of famous attractions e.g. Great Wall, Summer Palace, Forbidden City, Birdsnest Olympic complex etc. The guides provided background and historical context to these attractions. We were also introduced to the Chinese custom of eating banquet style! Our students engaged with all experiences in a positive manner and learnt much from these. In Shanghai students stayed in “Homestay” with a Chinese student buddy. While some students found the language barrier and different customs challenging, they all learnt a great deal from this experience. For 2 days they got to attend classes in our sister School Nth Shangnan Middle School. They learnt that school in China is very competitive, the day much longer and work expectations more rigorous. We are proud with the way our students engaged with all of the people they met. They actively engaged in all the classes and workshops and even initiated a friendly soccer match. A day of sightseeing and visit to Disneyland were opportunities for our students to engage with their Chinese buddies on an informal basis. Without exception they were fantastic ambassadors for our college and for Australia. We also visited Sth Shangnan Middle school where we experienced a range of classes and an English language center in Suzhou where a highlight was our students teaching the young Chinese students the “Nutbush” and the “Chicken Dance”. All students achieved considerable growth and learning from this trip. It was a pleasure to see the way they participated and engaged with new experiences and people. On the 8th of August, five Taichi students came to Language Centre of Bendigo Senior Secondary College to make dumplings. Though they could do Taichi very well , it was their first time of making dumplings. Chinese teachers at BSSC Confucius Classroom got the dumplings wrappers and the filling prepared beforehand, and also demonstrated several ways of folding dumplings. The Taichi students observed very carefully first and did their own dumplings very successfully at the end. After that, Chinese teachers showed them how to steam-fry the dumplings. Everyone enjoyed the dumplings and couldn't help saying how yummy the dumplings were. Since BSSC Confucius Classroom has provided Taichi session three years ago, nearly 20 students have been recruited . Throughout these years, Chinese teachers and Taichi students have built a strong connection. Whenever we need to promote our program to the public , there are always students from Taichi class coming forward to support us. We performed Taichi on formal stages before as well as on temporary stages on the walking street, and the public just enjoyed the performance. If you are interested in learning Taichi, you are most welcomed to join us from 9:30-10:30 on Tuesdays morning at Rosalind Park.
