At Big Hill Primary School, we have enjoyed the celebration of the ‘Dragon Boat Festival’ over the past two weeks. The festival was originally initiated to pay tribute to a famous Chinese poet Qu Yuan (340 BC). The festival occurs on the 5th day of the 5th month of the traditional lunar calendar and it was on 9th of June this year. There is a range of activities that Chinese people do to celebrate the festival, such as eating Zongzi (rice dumplings), racing dragon boats and beating drums.
The whole school did a fantastic job decorating the scales of a huge dragon as part of the celebration of the festival and it was on display on the Chinese board. Both parents and students were so excited to see the artwork. Also, Year 5 and 6 students spent some time making their own dragon drum with paper plates and colourful beads. Some of them even did a performance with it on the assembly. Year 3 and 4 made origami dragon boats and practised the relevant Chinese characters. All the students had a great time and have had a better understanding about the Dragon Boat Festival. Here I am glad to share some of the photos that were taken during our celebration. Comments are closed.
