August 15, 2016, it was a special day for Goornong Primary School students as they experienced a special Chinese culture – ink blowing painting. Ink blowing painting is a modern creation technique in traditional Chinese ink painting. There is no need for a brush, but to drip ink on paper and use mouth or straw to blow it into shape, fingers or cotton buds are then used to add colours to complete the painting. The plum blossom Goornong Primary School students are going to paint is one of the most typical plants -- plum blossoms in Chinese painting. After Ms Hu, from Bendigo Senior Secondary College Confucius Classroom, introduced the symbolism of Chinese ink painting and plum blossom in Chinese culture, she explained the techniques and tools needed for this task and demonstrated the steps in the creation process. Students were very keen when it was their turn to start painting. Each student was given a piece of paper, a straw and a cotton bud, along with some red and yellow paint. As soon as Ms Hu dripped ink onto their paper, students started to blow the plum branches. While painting the plum blossoms, students were immersed in classic Chinese music ‘Three Stanzas of Plum Blossoms’. After students blew the branches, they used cotton buds to dot red petals, some also used yellow paint to dot the stamen. Now the plum blossoms are completed, but the painting is not completed. A complete Chinese painting is a combination of painting, calligraphy and seal. Therefore, students need to name the painting and leave the date with their names. As students have no seal, they left their finger prints on the painting. Looking at their own work, students were fulfilled with a sense of accomplishment. Look at their beautiful smiles! 9th of August, it was Chinese Valentine’s Day. Teachers of Bendigo Senior Secondary College Confucius Classroom held some Chinese cultural experience activities. During those activities, teachers introduced the story about Niulang and Zhinu ,who were a couple being forced to separate by the Queen of heaven , printed the pictures of Niulang, Zhinu and magpies, drilled holes on each magpie , and asked students to let a thread go through all the holes consecutively to build a bridge for Niulang and Zhinu. Community class on every Wednesday evening from 5:00 to 6:40 is a project that Bendigo Senior Secondary College has been promoting with a lot of effort. The age range of community class students is very wide, from 5 years old to more than 60 years old. In addition to Chinese teaching, teachers from Confucius classroom hold the Chinese culture related activities, such as Chinese knots, paper cutting, ink painting, Beijing opera mask painting for the students.
Chinese cuisine plays an important role in Chinese culture. Dumpling is one of the most popular traditional food in China and also very popular around the world.
At the end of the first semester 2016, students in Bridgewater Primary School got to know more Chinese culture by making dumplings. At the beginning of the dumpling making session, a Chinese Hanban teacher Ms Zhang Chunjing gave students a brief introduction to Chinese dumplings and the culture about them. And then Ms Zhang explained the ingredients and demonstrated how to make dumplings step by step. The students were very engaged and enjoyed the process of making dumplings. Everyone was very excited to make the dumplings by themselves. Once they understood how to wrap the dumplings, they tried some other different ways to folding the wrappers. Ms Zhang cooked the dumplings while a Chinese VIT teacher Mr Zhang Xinran had some other Chinese activities with the students. All the students enjoyed the delicious taste of the dumplings made by themselves and they shared the delicacy with their teachers at school. At Big Hill Primary School, we have enjoyed the celebration of the ‘Dragon Boat Festival’ over the past two weeks. The festival was originally initiated to pay tribute to a famous Chinese poet Qu Yuan (340 BC). The festival occurs on the 5th day of the 5th month of the traditional lunar calendar and it was on 9th of June this year. There is a range of activities that Chinese people do to celebrate the festival, such as eating Zongzi (rice dumplings), racing dragon boats and beating drums.
The whole school did a fantastic job decorating the scales of a huge dragon as part of the celebration of the festival and it was on display on the Chinese board. Both parents and students were so excited to see the artwork. Also, Year 5 and 6 students spent some time making their own dragon drum with paper plates and colourful beads. Some of them even did a performance with it on the assembly. Year 3 and 4 made origami dragon boats and practised the relevant Chinese characters. All the students had a great time and have had a better understanding about the Dragon Boat Festival. Here I am glad to share some of the photos that were taken during our celebration. The Confucius Institute at the University of Melbourne and the Chinese Language Teacher's Association of Victoria (CLTAV) are proud to present a forum which will focus specifically on how parents of non-Chinese background learners of Mandarin can promote a healthy learning environment for their children. The "School Open Day" activities include a visit to the school, student performances and lunch. The Chinese class as a special project joined in this “Open Day”.
Only three weeks preparation, the Grade 5/6 students used their spare time to rehearse. 5/6P class students performed martial arts - five-step boxing. None of them knew Kungfu before, but they used their rest time to practice, and finally completed a perfect and confident performance and won the parents’ applause. Two students from 5/6W class did a role-play. The scenario is a naughty student in the class raises her hands to ask the teacher acted by another student whether she can go to drink water and go to the toilet. Two students needed to perform all the dialogues in Chinese. In order to let parents understand the Chinese conversation, they used exaggerated body language and facial expression to convey the meaning of dialogue, triggering waves of laughter from parents. After the performance, Sienna, the girl who played the naughty student, said she dreamed of becoming a great actress in the future. Finally, the Chinese song "Congratulations" as the finale show was sung by 5/6K students. Specimen Hill Primary School has given a great support to the Confucius Classroom program. They aim to provide students with a good Chinese learning atmosphere. This year two Grade 5/6 students participate in "Hello, China" project heading to China for a cultural experience, which is contributed to the exchange and development of Australian and Chinese culture. Weeroona College is located in the city of Bendigo, Victoria, Australia. The school was established in 1999, and as one of the five public high schools in Bendigo, it provides Year 7 to Year 10 secondary education to around 800 students.
The school takes LOTE program as their curriculum priority and develops as a specialist program. Weeroona College is one of the earliest schools that set up Chinese learning program in the Great Bendigo Region. The curriculum and program structure of Chinese learning is well developed. All new Year 7 students have to choose either Chinese or French as their compulsory subject. Other year levels are all having corresponding level of Chinese subject for those who want to further develop their Chinese. Weeroona College is one of the 3 public high school partners with Confucius Classroom of Bendigo Senior Secondary College, having a friendly and strong partnership with it. From 2013, Confucius Classroom of Bendigo Senior Secondary College began to support the Chinese teaching in Weeroona College. From 2016, they agreed to continue strengthening their existing partnership. The school has employed the Chinese teacher from Confucius Classroom as their new Year 7 students’ Chinese teacher. The number of students taking Chinese as their second language learning has increased by 50% compared to the figure in the previous year. This excellent result has strongly linked to the effort that made by the college leadership team and local Confucius Classroom promoting Chinese language learning in the local community. During the Spring Festival, Chinese Classroom in Weeroona College organized a series of Spring Festival activities, including Chinese new year introduction, Chinese paper cutting, sticking window decorations and hanging lanterns. The activities were well supported by the Principal Ms. Leanne Peace and the school leadership team. The passion for and interests on learning Chinese have been promoted among students, and have also deepened the students’understanding of Chinese language and culture. In 2016, many initiatives are going to be set up between Confucius Classroom in Bendigo Senior Secondary College and Weeroona College. They will improve the students’ second language skills, and strengthen the bridge of friendship between China and Australia. As a part of our Chinese language learning, in order to allow students to experience traditional Chinese culture and arouse their interest in Chinese culture and Chinese language, collaborating with Confucius Classroom teachers, our school organises a variety of Chinese culture experience workshops for students to explore during their lunch time on every Wednesday. Students are immersed in various Chinese cultural activities which include Chinese calligraphy, Chinese paper cutting, Chinese ink painting, Chinese martial arts, and other Chinese art craft making.
This Wednesday (on 11th May) our school has organised a Chinese calligraphy activity. Although it was the first time for Camp Hill Primary School to have a Chinese calligraphy workshop during lunch time, students were excited and showed great interest and enthusiasm to participate. During the workshop, the teacher first introduced the origin of Chinese characters and the significance of Shufa (Chinese calligraphy) in Chinese cultures, and showing how to properly hold a Chinese brush pen and how to write some basic strokes of Chinese characters. After explanation, the students started to practice writing Chinese characters with Chinese brush pen. All of them were amazed by the “magic paper” (a special cloth paper using only water to write) and the beauty of Chinese calligraphy. At the end of the workshop, they were so proud that they can write Chinese characters with Chinese brush pen. All students had enormous fun in learning about Chinese calligraphy and practicing writing Chinese calligraphy, and this was just the very beginning of our Chinese culture experience workshops. Come and join us next Wednesday. In term 2, 2016, our schedule for Chinese culture experience workshops is as below: 11th May Chinese calligraphy 18th May Chinese calligraphy 25th May Chinese calligraphy 1st June Chinese paper cutting 8th June Chinese knot making 15th June Chinese Kungfu – Tai Chi Cardross Primary School’s Chinese language lessons were brought to life on Wednesday as students spent the day cooking traditional food, trying on traditional clothing and learning about the country’s rich history.
Since the start of the year, Prep to Year 2 students have spent one lesson a week engaged in language lessons, delivered via video link by teachers at Bendigo Senior Secondary College. Cardross Primary School teacher Simon Trembath said it has been a great addition to the curriculum. “It’s really important to expose our kids to another language, but given our location, it’s quite challenging finding teachers based in the area,” Mr Trembath said. “So this is a fantastic opportunity to have high quality teachers delivering those lessons to our students.” On Wednesday, students had the chance to meet their Chinese language teachers away from the video screen, when they paid a visit to the school and hosted a cultural activity day. “We had four teachers who take our language lessons and an assistant principal travel up from Bendigo to run the series of sessions for the whole school, which was a great extension to the program,” Mr Trembath said. During the activity sessions students dressed in traditional costumes, made dumplings, learned about the history of Beijing Opera and received a few pointers about using chopsticks. The first term just ended and all the schools that are involved in the Confucius classroom program have made great achievements! We spent certain amount of time focusing on the celebration of Chinese New Year, which is the most important festival in China. We explored the festival from a wide range of aspects including activities, food, clothing and Chinese symbols, etc. We had a lot of fun listening to the ancient folktales about the Nian monster, singing the Happy Chinese New Year song (Xin Nian Hao), trying on traditional Chinese costumes and making different hand crafts.
Also, Grade Three and Four students from Lockwood Primary School went for an excursion to the Golden Dragon Museum last week. We visited the Chinese garden, the ancient temple and got a chance to learn more about the history of the first Chinese immigrants that came to Australia during the Gold Rush. We had a lot of fun hands-on activities. For example, the students were excited to see the giant god Guanyin and prayed to her for good luck. Some students even got an opportunity to scratch the belly of the statue of the laughing God Mi Le Fo in order to stay happy for their whole lives! Besides, inside the museum, the guide took us around and showed us a lot of amazing exhibitions, including the longest dragon in Australia that was used for parades, the wax statues of the Chinese merchants who first came to Australia in the past as well as different kinds of ancient Chinese inventions. When we were in the Chinese garden, we were given a chance to feed the beautiful gold fish in the pond and to enjoy the amazing view of the Bendigo city standing in the pavilion on the top of the rock hill. All the children were so passionate about the Chinese culture and history and could not wait to come back again. I am excited to show everyone some photos that we took during the Chinese New Year celebration and the Golden Dragon Museum excursion. |
